Walking through the garden courtyard with lazing koi swimming in the pond, I was transported into a different time.

However, as I entered the Sunset Dining Room of Yamashiro, it was clear that they had skillfully blended their historical charm with modern elegance. The wall stretched from one end of the room to the other, nothing but glass windows that framed a near-uninterrupted view of Los Angeles and the descending sun. That evening, I watched the sky change from pinks to oranges to purples; every few minutes, it would look different as I sat at my table in the Sunset Dining Room. And it's no wonder we were not the first to be in awe of that view, Hollywood stars like our ordinary selves have been coming to dine, while outside of this cocooning space, LA becomes itself. I enjoyed the dessert for longer than I should have, a modern take on traditional Japanese flavor, not wanting to step back out into the real world from this haven.
