History
Our History
The name Yamashiro translates as “Mountain Palace” in Japanese. In 1911, the Bernheimer brothers began construction of the hilltop mansion to house their priceless collection of Asian treasures. Hundreds of craftsmen were brought from the Orient to recreate the replica of a palace located in the “Yamashiro” province mountains near Kyoto, Japan. Yamashiro sits 250 feet above Hollywood Boulevard and was completed in 1914.
Entrance and Driveway
A beautiful shot looking towards what is still Yamshiro's entrance. This was before the residence was turned into a restaurant. Now, you'll see beautiful glass windows that were added to the front left and right sides of the majestic building, allowing diners to experience dining with Los Angeles' skyline
Our Sushi Bar
If you are standing facing South inside of what is now our Sushi Bar, you'll be looking through to our entrance and our lounge, all pictured here as it was over 50 years ago.
Garden Courtyard
Our open air courtyard still sits in the middle of Yamashiro, only now with a pond and several koi fish that are approximately 60 years old!
Our Waiting Area
If you look closely, this is now home to our waiting area inside the restaurant! Part of our remodeling efforts in 2017 brought back a similar wooden cherry blossom design to adorn our walls, custom made for Yamashiro's 100th anniversary.
Pagoda Entrance
If you walk down into our gardens, you'll notice our Buddha residing here.
Our 100 Year Old Bicycle
Yes. That's right! That's one of our most famous artifacts of which we still have in our collection.
Our 600 Year Old Pagoda
Yamishiro's Pagoda was flown in from Japan and is currently the oldest structure in California.
Postcards
Some of our antique memorabilia included postcards that guests could send to loved ones all around the world after visiting our iconic Mountain Palace.
